What is Whole Body Vibration?

During a Whole Body Vibration session, you’ll be positioned on a specially designed platform that produces controlled vibrations. These vibrations can create small, rapid muscle contractions and may help you feel more activated, grounded, or relaxed, depending on your goals. Sessions are typically brief, low‑impact, and can be tailored to your comfort level. Many guests choose Whole Body Vibration as a complement to exercise, physical therapy, or other wellness practices they’re already using under the guidance of their healthcare providers.

What are the potential wellness benefits of Whole Body Vibration?

People use Whole Body Vibration as part of a broader self‑care routine and report a variety of potential benefits. Experiences differ from person to person, and results are not guaranteed.

  • Supports bone health as part of an overall wellness plan
(Whole Body Vibration is not a treatment for osteoporosis or other bone diseases. Please consult your healthcare provider for diagnosis or medical care.)
  • May help support muscle strength and conditioning when combined with regular movement and exercise
  • May gently support healthy lymphatic flow and circulation
  • Some guests report feeling less post‑exercise muscle tension or soreness
  • May help you feel more flexible and at ease in your movement
  • May support balance, coordination, and overall agility as part of a regular movement routine
  • May promote a gentle increase in circulation and a feeling of warmth or vitality
  • May support relaxation and a calmer stress response
(While some studies explore how vibration and relaxation practices may influence stress markers, individual responses vary and specific hormone changes are not guaranteed.)
  • Can be used to complement an overall weight‑management or body‑wellness plan that includes nutrition, movement, and guidance from your healthcare provider. Whole Body Vibration is not a stand‑alone weight‑loss treatment, and individual results vary.

Are there contraindications?

Be aware that whole-body vibration (WBV) is a new concept to many medical professionals. If your providers are not familiar with the modality, we advise that you pass this information along to them so that you can determine together if whole-body vibration is suitable from a safety standpoint.

Certain issues are absolute contraindications (retinal detachment, DVT/PE blood clots), some are relative contraindications (surgery, recently implanted pacemaker) in that they require that a certain amount of time passes before trying whole-body vibration, and some are precautions (kidney or gallstones, joint replacement surgery).

Whole Body Vibration Contraindications:

  • Pregnancy
  • DVT/PE (deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism)
  • Retinal detachment
  • Epilepsy/seizures
  • Untreated orthostatic hypotension
  • Open wounds/new incisions
  • Recently placed IUD or mesh sling
  • Complex regional pain syndrome/RSD
  • Recently placed pacemaker/stent/valve/shunt
  • Severe cardiac conditions/disease (heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia)
  • Soft tissue implants (corneal, cochlear)
  • Acute hernia
  • Acute inflammation
  • Acute migraine
  • Acute dizziness
  • Recent surgery
  • Malignant tumors
  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Severe diabetes
  • Acute spinal disc herniation

*Some of these issues are relative contraindications depending on the time frame or the severity of the condition (i.e. recent surgery, heart conditions). Whole body vibration may be permitted in certain cases with clearance from the physician.

Precautions should be taken for these issues:

  • Joint replacement (considered safe to implement 2-3 months post-surgery with uncomplicated healing- clear with MD/surgeon)
  • Fracture (considered safe to implement 2-3 months post-injury/surgery with uncomplicated healing, clear with MD/surgeon)
  • Kidney stones/gallstones (clear with MD)
  • Vertigo (clear with MD)

What does the research say about Whole Body Vibration?

Some peer‑reviewed studies have explored Whole Body Vibration, especially in people living with fibromyalgia and other chronic conditions. In these studies, Whole Body Vibration—often combined with gentle exercise—has been associated with short‑term improvements in areas such as balance, coordination, pain sensitivity, fatigue, and overall quality of life for some participants.

At the same time, major reviews of the research describe the current evidence as “limited” or “very low quality” because the studies are small, use different protocols, and often do not show lasting effects once the sessions stop. Whole Body Vibration is not considered a medical treatment or cure for fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, or any other condition.

We invite you to think of Whole Body Vibration as one possible tool in a broader self‑care or rehabilitation plan, rather than a stand‑alone solution. If you’re managing a health condition, we encourage you to share any research you’re curious about with your healthcare provider and decide together whether this type of session could be a supportive addition to your routine.
